The Future of Independent Theatrical Animation in China: Global Implications

Online in

Chris Bremble

Founder & CEO, Base Media

China's theatrical animation market has entered a new era. Driven by the unprecedented success of films such as Ne Zha 2, the continued growth of original Chinese animated IP, and the strong performance of international animated features such as Zootopia 2 in China, the country has become one of the most closely watched animation markets in the world.

In this session, Chris Bremble, Founder and CEO of Base Media, will share his firsthand perspective on the evolution of China's independent animation landscape—from the growth of local animated IP and the development of theatrical animation, to the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of the industry.

Drawing from Base's experience across some of China's most influential animated productions, including Ne Zha 2 and the Boonie Bears franchise, as well as the creation of its original animated IP Wish Dragon, Chris will explore how Chinese studios are building globally relevant stories, how audience expectations are evolving, and what these changes mean for the future of global animation.

As a studio working at the intersection of Eastern and Western animation, Base brings a unique perspective on how independent animation can create new opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and storytelling across cultures.
