Francesco Casetti is Sterling Professor of Humanities and Film and Media Studies at Yale. Visiting professor at Paris-Sorbonne Nouvelle, University of Iowa, and Harvard; fellowships at the Otago University, the Bauhaus University-Weimar, and Freie Universtität Berlin; in 2000, "Chair of Italian Culture" for a distinguished scholar at Berkeley. Among his books there are Inside the Gaze, Theories of Cinema, 1945-1995; Eye of the Century: Film, Experience, Modernity; and The Lumière Galaxy. Seven Key Words for the Cinema to Come, a study on the reconfiguration of cinema in a post-medium epoch. His last book is Screening Fears. On Protective Media; a critical review of modern visual media, from the 17th century Phantasmagoria to the 21st century smartphones, the book claims that screen worked and works as a shield against an aggressive reality rather than a surface on which display
