She has devoted her career to covering the art and science of entertainment, bringing to her work a wealth of knowledge of entertainment technology and the creative arts, as well as film history. For her work, Carolyn has been honored with American Cinema Editors’ Robert Wise Award for journalistic contributions to film editing, the International Cinematographers Guild’s Technicolor William A. Fraker Award for journalistic contributions to cinematography, and the Advanced Imaging Society’s Distinguished Leadership Lumiere Award.

She joined Variety in February, following more than a decade at The Hollywood Reporter. Earlier, she worked in the U.S. and aboard, as an editor, reporter or columnist, on titles including SHOOT, British Cinematographer and the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. She also co-authored a book about stereoscopic 3D filmmaking, titled “Exploring 3D” (Focal Press, 2013).

Carolyn is an active member of the community—a frequent conference speaker/moderator who has served on numerous industry boards, committees and award juries. That includes nearly two decades on the HPA Board of Directors, during which time she co-founded and was founding chair of the HPA Awards.

Her commitment to education includes serving as a part-time lecturer at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts.
