Katana: From MultiShot to MultiStyle
Stylized rendering, at its core, is a look development challenge: how do we translate concept art into dynamic, animated 3D images? This lecture explores how The Foundry’s Katana supports the development of multiple styles—cel-shaded, line art, painterly, and watercolor—shaping them into distinct yet animatable visual languages. We will examine how stylization can be layered, adjusted, and refined directly in the renderer to achieve final-pixel looks without relying on heavy compositing. With RenderMan Stylized Looks as the foundation, the focus will be on experimentation and iteration, giving artists practical ways to compare, refine, and evolve different styles side by side. Attendees will gain insight into how look development not only translates artistic intent into 3D but also expands the creative possibilities for entire projects.
