Stylized Rendering: Two Approaches From 2D Artwork to 3D and Back Again
This hands-on workshop explores two complementary approaches to stylized rendering, based on production experience from The World’s Divide by Denver Jackson at Cloudrise Pictures. Participants will learn how to translate 2D artwork into a 3D pipeline and deliver final images with pen-and-ink, watercolor, linework, and painterly aesthetics. First, we create stylized looks directly in the renderer using Katana and RenderMan; then we shift to a compositing-driven workflow in Nuke with custom tools and data passes. Finally, a hybrid session brings both approaches together, showing how Katana and Nuke can be combined for rapid look development and iteration. With real-world examples, USD-based workflows, and interactive Q&A, participants will gain both creative insight and practical strategies to apply stylized rendering effectively in production.
